Our Roman morning with That History Bloke by Xander, Iris, Lauren, Milly & Lily

We learned about the Romans today. That History Bloke made it so much fun. His name was Richard.

Richard started by playing a song on a lyre, which is a bit like a small harp. Then we got to see Newcastle now and Newcastle 2000 years ago. We found out that Whitley Bay was just over the border of Hadrian’s Wall.

Richard taught us about a weapon you throw through the air. People might say it is a spear but it is a javelin. We passed around some mysterious objects and had to guess what they were. We also passed around some weapons like a dagger and a sword but we couldn’t pull the dagger or the sword all the way out though. We got to wear a helmet which was very cool. The helmets that the Romans had were made out of iron and really heavy. They also had to have soft padding underneath to protect their head from getting hurt when someone bangs them the helmet with a sword. We also got to hold the shield.

We got to do the actions like soldiers. We how earned to salute Caesar and we learned how to stand and march like the soldiers going in time to Richard shouting “Sin.Dex.Sin.Dex…” which is like left, right, left, right.

We played a fun game called Rota which was a bit like four in a row but you could keep moving pieces. Finally, we had to finish, so Richard picked up a horn. He told us that he was going to vibrate his lips into the horn and the sound would shoot out into the ceiling, bounce to the floor and travel up our legs. It was so loud and we could really feel the vibrations.

That was our great morning with That History Bloke. Thanks Richard.
